Press Release

A memorial service to remember the life of long-serving councillor and Freeman of the Borough, Cllr James (Jim) Finnie took place on Saturday, 30 October at St John the Baptist Parish Church in Crowthorne.

It was attended by family, friends, and colleagues from his exceptional career within Bracknell Forest. The service reflected on Jim’s life in the borough where he was first elected in 1976 to the ward of Crowthorne and Easthampstead. Having served the people of Bracknell Forest for just over two decades in various community positions, he became the borough Mayor in May 1997. In May 2000, at the end of his final year as Mayor of the Borough of Bracknell Forest, Jim was awarded the honour of Freeman of the Borough.

In his memory, the square outside Crowthorne Library has been renamed ‘Jim Finnie Square’. This permanent tribute gives friends, family and residents a place to remember the former councillor.

Cllr Paul Bettison OBE, Leader of Bracknell Forest Council, addressed the congregation with a moving speech which included: “He was an incredible character with a truly giving heart, someone who always put the needs of others before his own right until the very end.

“We are very lucky to have had such a great example of a leader, a volunteer and a dedicated, compassionate councillor in Bracknell Forest and we will be forever grateful for you Jim.”

Jim passed away aged 83 in January 2021. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
